History
Sitla Hotel has had various roles over the years. In the beginning, it was an orphanage for youths. There was no church in Øvre Årdal (Upper Årdal) then, so the Sitla basement functioned as a church for some years.
In 1970, Farnes church was built, and what had once functioned as a church was now remodelled as a pub and given the name «Slusken». Slusken is a local nickname for the navvies – those who worked on constructing the impressive old road up the mountain toward Heirsnosi in Årdal. Today, you can also walk this road from the Sitla Hotel; it’s a nice hike if you want to ascend «the 1000-meter» and see how magnificent the village, the Årdalsvatnet Lake and Bøttejuvet look from the bird perspective.
The pub only existed for a few years; since then, voluntary organisations have used the building for various purposes. Today, Sitla is a self-service hotel with good standards and a variety of room categories to suit different needs, as well as both short-term and long-term accommodation.
Food and restaurants nearby
Sitla Hotel works closely with Klingenberg Hotel at Årdalstangen concerning food. Here, you will find a wide selection of cuisine at Strondi Restaurant, café and bar, and the garden Hamnehagen during summer time. Strondi Restaurant is situated at Årdalstangen, a 10-minute drive away, and the outside dining gives you a magnificent view of the Årdalfjord.
During the summer, you can also get food at Vetti Farm Tourist Station if you feel hungry as you hike the People’s Road towards the Vettisfossen waterfall. There are hosts at Vetti Gard Tourist Station from mid-June to mid-September every year. This place is really worth a visit if you’re in Årdal.
